My 2 cents. I have been developing for 12+ years. I’ve worked with many different technologies. I have to say, in my experience, SharePoint Workflow development is by far the most frustrating with which to develop. Workflows execute inconsistently. Debugging is painful. There are several bugs in the platform (SPS 2007). The most frustrating bug for me has been the OnTaskCreated bug where the OnTaskCreated event does not fire and locks the workflow inside parallel activities. You would think after over a half dozen updates, Microsoft would have resolved this one by now.

While attempting to use the stsadm tool on a SharePoint FBA site, I experienced the following error.

“The server administration programs and the Windows SharePoint Services Web applications on this Web server are not compatible. Ensure that the administration program is the same version as the Web application.”

Other posts I could find mentioned to delete the web application and create a new one using the same content database. I thought that was scary. Here’s what ended up working for me.

Made a backup copy of the web.config.

In Central Admin, Application management…
Extended the Web application to a new Intranet zone site – any port.

Removed SharePoint FBA web site from web app without deleting the IIS web site.

Extended the original, existing web application to the original, existing IIS web site.

Removed SharePoint from the Intranet site from step #2 and deleted this IIS web site.

Manually incorporated the custom web.config settings from the original into the new.

Stsadm now behaves and the versioning error has gone away. Yeah.

Hope this helps someone.
